Encounter with heavier females changes courtship and fighting efforts of male field crickets Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

چکیده

Abstract The effects of mating experience on male behavior are mediated by four factors: cost, such as resource depletion, perception opportunities, self-perception attractiveness, and female quality. For example, encountering females might increase expectations prospective while copulation increases attractiveness in males. To determine the relative importance these factors, effect two components reproductive effort (courtship fighting effort) Gryllus bimaculatus was examined. Calling activity before after measured, success recorded. Subsequently, intensity outcome male–male Female encounter increased calling irrespective copulation, thereby indicating that opportunities is important factor for Changes courtship males were larger lower when they previously paired with relatively heavier females. These results indicate also affected quality previous partners.

Molecular divergence between Gryllus rubens and Gryllus texensis, sister species of field crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

We assess the degree of sequence divergence in the maternally inherited mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome b (CytB) genes between two sister species of field crickets, Gryllus rubens Scudder, 1902 and Gryllus texensis Cade and Otte, 2000. We analyzed 1460 base pairs from 10 individuals of each species; individuals were sampled from areas of both allopatry and sympatry. Ov...

Trilling Field Crickets in a Zone of Overlap (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Gryllus)

A bimodal distribution of pulse rates in Þeld recordings of calling songs suggests that the ranges of the morphologically similar Þeld crickets Gryllus rubens Scudder and G. nr. integer Scudder (5“integer”) overlap for at least 300 km in western Florida. When sons were reared from 42 females collected at 5 sites on 7 trips to this region during 1977Ð1978, those within a sibship had similar moda...

ARTHOPOD BIOLOGY Pulse Rates in the Songs of Trilling Field Crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllidae: Gryllus)

In cricket calling songs, pulse rate is often the feature that allows females to home on the songs of conspeciÞc males while ignoring those of other species. A previous study of the sibling speciesGryllus rubensScudderandG. texensisCade&Otte fromwesternFlorida showedunexpected effects of developmental conditions and parental generation on the pulse rates of their songs. The current study tested...

Do Mediterranean crickets Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) come from the Mediterranean? Largescale phylogeography and regional gene flow.

We investigate the degree of between-population genetic differentiation in the Mediterranean field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus, as well as the possible causes of such differentiation. Using cytochrome b mtDNA sequences, we estimate genetic variation in G. bimaculatus from seven South African and two Mediterranean populations. Within-population genetic variation in Europe (two haplotypes, one un...

Male Responses to Conspecific Advertisement Signals in the Field Cricket Gryllus rubens (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

In many species males aggregate and produce long-range advertisement signals to attract conspecific females. The majority of the receivers of these signals are probably other males most of the time, and male responses to competitors' signals can structure the spatial and temporal organization of the breeding aggregation and affect male mating tactics. I quantified male responses to a conspecifi...
